We get asked all the time how to become a model or where to start their modeling journey. The truth is , there is no direct formula but from our experience of being in this industry, we have a pretty good idea what it takes.

@nakitende_esther

Most of it is from consistency and improving yourself. Many think that you need thousands of dollars just to start which is false. Its all about how you execute your resources and we feel everyone can do it once they put in the dedication.

Here are some tips that we feel any beginner could use on becoming a model.

Invest In Your Photos

@exquisitekurves

When it comes to sticking out, photos do matter and that’s why its important to put time into them. Taking pictures from your phone wont always do it and 8 out of 10 times we can tell you took them from your phone.

Yes certain phones can capture beautiful angles and lighting with editing but the models who are doing it on a bigger level are using more than just their phones. As we like to say “you gotta pay to play” and photo shoots is something you want to invest in if you haven’t already.

@pureivorydotca

It doesn’t cost thousands of dollars to get started but you will have to make an investment. Start by looking at local photographers in your area or looking for a photographer that wants to exchange their work for your photos. There are many ways to get around it so there’s no excuses.

Another way is finding local Facebook groups dedicated to modeling and photographers and also using Instagram hashtags. From our experience there is always local groups no matter where you stay, you just have to look. A website where we find useful when vetted right is your local Craigslist. In the jobs and gigs section you can look and search through listings. Make sure to ask all questions, ask for social proof and past work to make sure they are legit.

Remember to PRACTICE SAFETY FIRST when contacting or planning to meet anyone for a photo shoot.

Build Up Your Social Medias

@edeebeau

Having a social media page that sticks out and a good flowing aesthetics helps even more. The first thing your visitors will see is how your page is structurally organized which in a lot of cases is a quick attention grabber. Having your page in some type of structure or patterns help the eye flow when scrolling.

You also want to make sure that you distinguish what your page is about. Try not to mix your personal page with your business page, we want the business to be more about the work and the art vs what you ate for lunch on your personal page. BUT this is not a deal breaker, we know a lot of influencers who mix both pages up and it works just as well.

@amber.nova

Do whatever makes you feel comfortable at the end of the day. Just pay attention to bigger pages and see what they’re doing that you can implement on yours.

Network and Reach Out

@jasminegunn91

Once you start establishing yourself start to reach out to companies to work with. The more investment you put into your photos and portfolio will pay off. You can try and start off by being a brand ambassador, this is a great way to expand your looks and audience.

There are plenty of online boutiques, local shops and designers worldwide looking to work with individuals just like you. What will be the first thing they look for? Is your social media page and the quality of photos you have.

@misscurvylala

They will try to envision how you will help represent and elevate their brand which is why presentation matters.

Take Care of Your Body

@leni_kei

All depending on the type of modeling and the route you plan to pursue, keeping up with your body is a must. As we love to always preference , we encourage you to do whatever makes you feel comfortable.

Not saying you have to lose weight but keeping your body firm and toned up is a plus. With big agencies and companies they tend to look for this. Some companies don’t even care about looks and more about personality which is great, but having options is even better.

@nerdycurvyandthriving

There are plenty of curvy and plus size influencers who have now taking fitness into more consideration. As a result, companies have been incorporating more into their brand awareness because they understand that representation matters.

Take Constructive Criticism and Move On

No one person or company can determine your final outcome. You have to keep pushing and keep improving yourself. Yes we understand it can be discouraging but do understand everyone is looking for something different.

Eventually you will finds yours.
