We all love to go on vacations and explore the world we live in however rarely do we love the flying it takes to get there. Whether you want to see the world, travel for business or are just taking a trip to see family and friends, flying can put anyone on edge and for those of us who are plus size it can be a downright nightmare.
Before you decide to cancel your next trip, we have some tips that can reduce stress, make you more comfortable and able to handle anything!
1. Prepare yourself physically
Like almost anything in life. preparation is key and when you travel as a plus size gal or guy, you will need to do your research.
Over the last few years, airline seats have become smaller and smaller in an effort to sell more tickets. While a pretty standard size is 18″, many airlines have shrunk down to as much as 14.5″
Check with your airline or even on sites like SeatGuru to see which airline will be the best for your situation.
You always have the option to buy a second seat for comfort by calling the airline, but by doing some research beforehand you will know if that is going to be necessary. Be sure to check out Southwest as they have a Customer of Size policy that allows you to book both seats and then be refunded for the second seat. Other great options are to take flights at times that are less busy for flying, ask a friend who is traveling with you to take the seat next to you, or request a seat belt extender from a flight attendant.
Dress in light and loose clothing for the airport and plane. If you tend to get cold instead of wearing a sweater, dress in layers so that you can shed some if you start to feel hot and sweaty.
Be sure to get the airport early so you do not have to rush around have plenty of time. You will want to use the restroom before getting on your flight. This may help you avoid having to use the always too small airplane bathroom.
2. Prepare yourself mentally
Preparing yourself physically may be the easy part, but getting your mental game straight may take a little more time.
Sometimes smaller passengers are not always very kind or considerate of plus size travelers. You may find as you board the plane you get looks of anything from fear to disgust.
The best way to combat these behaviors is to be as nice as possible. Smile big, say hello, let them see your personality over your size. If you find yourself sitting next to another passenger try to be understanding of their comfort level too. Introduce yourself, smile and be friendly. It can be so much harder for someone to be snippy or rude if you are showering them with kindness.
3. Be comfortable being you
We all want to enjoy our vacations and be comfortable where ever we are. This can be hard if we did not plan well and end up on a vacation someplace that just does not suit us.
For instance I would likely not feel comfortable at an inclusive resort where the primary customer type are fitness enthusiasts.
First and foremost let me say that you should never let your size keep you from going anywhere you truly want to go, but there are a few places that are a little more plus size friendly than others.
Some of those countries include Samoa, Fiji, South Africa, Gambia, Egypt, and Kenya. Keep in mind that there are plus size people all over this great big beautiful world and they will be everywhere you go!
4. Find your perfect fit
If you are unsure of where to go or would like to have some help choosing a place that is a little more plus size friendly, there are resorts and travel agents that cater to plus size individuals. You can easily find places like this by doing a simple Google search or check out Abundant Travel which caters to a bigger clientele.
If you plan to make your own arrangements you may want to consider asking lots of questions to make sure the place you will be will be able to accommodate you. You may want to ask questions about what floor you will be on, how many stairs there are, whether you will have a walk in shower or tub/shower combo.
5. You have every right
One of the most important things I think every plus size traveler should keep in mind is that you have the same exact rights as any other passenger, traveler, and guest. Your weight does not mean that you paid any less for your flight, room or vacation. Do not let anyone treat you otherwise. Stand tall, be confident, and remember you deserve this and worked hard for it.
SAFE TRAVELS!
